SWAT - We are Big Tobacco's Nightmare

SWAT Recruit

Nine out of 10 of all adult smokers in the U.S. begin smoking while in their teens, or earlier, and two-thirds become regular, daily smokers before they reach the age of 19. In Florida, more than 21,000 kids (under 18) become new smokers each year.  The Florida Department of Health in Union County and Tobacco Free Florida support Students Working Against Tobacco.

Here are some of FDOH Union's SWAT's many accomplishments for 2014-2015:

  • 4 youth visited Body of Christ Assembly in Lake Butler and presented facts about how the tobacco industry targets tobacco products to youth
  • SWAT spoke to the school board about the current tobacco model policy in the schools and encouraged them to consider adopting the remaining two that weren't present
  • Attended a meeting of the Board of County Commissioners to identify the current number of parks, and the policy on smoke free parks in Union County, and are currently working on making these smoke-free.
  • Youth attended football games and handed out information to educate the community about the harmful effects of tobacco
  • The Middle School chapter attended the Relay for Life and handed information out about being tobacco free and made pictures of their super heroes
  • The Middle School chapter collected shoes from the whole school and laid them out in front of the school to visually depict the number of people that die daily from tobacco illness, which they did in conjunction with World No Tobacco Day

Youth are encouraged to JOIN THE MOVEMENT: Taking action and becoming a part of something that impacts others takes guts.  It's not for everyone. But for those who participate, the friendships and inspiration they will pass on to others is life changing.
