Heavy Rainfall and Isolated Tornadoes are Primary Threat 

The Union County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Management would like to inform residents that a tropical storm warning is posted for this area.  TS Colin’s local impacts will be heavy rainfall and a possible tornado threat.  Although the likelihood of strong Tropical Storm force winds is low, expect sustained winds around 30-40 mph with gusts to 50 mph.  The effects will be very similar to long-lasting strong afternoon thunderstorms.  Rainfall of 3-5 inches with locally higher amounts (8 inches+) is possible depending on the exact track of the storm after landfall.  Parts of Union County are already saturated, which increases the likelihood of downed trees / powerlines.  Flash flooding may occur and may lead to some road closures.  Please do not be on the road unless absolutely necessary.

Isolated tornadoes are possible with any tropical system.  The National Weather Service will issue Tornado Warnings as necessary.  Use local news outlets and weather radios to stay aware and informed.  Please visit www.unionsheriff.us and click on the “CodeRED” link on the right hand side of the main page.  This will allow you to enroll in community notifications of significant weather events. 

As with any event during hurricane season, make sure you are prepared, especially those citizens who live in low lying areas.  Minimum requirements are one gallon of water per person per day, at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food, battery-powered AM\FM and weather radios, medications, flashlights, a first aid kit, cell phone chargers, tools, and full gas tanks in vehicles.  Put away yard furniture and park your vehicles in higher spots.
